  In the case of a normally closed type of conventional solenoid valve, continuous energization is required to maintain open state. The latching solenoid valve doesn't require a power supply for the purpose of maintaining open state through the utilization of a permanent magnet. The diagram below shows an example of the EL Series pinch valve.
The attractive force between the pole piece and plunger by which a valve's operation is produced varies according to three factors:

1. The distance between the pole piece and the plunger (the valve's stroke)
2. The magnetic force of the coil
3. The magnetic force of the permanent magnet.

According to the balance of this force with the spring, the valve changes between open and closed state.

Permanent magnet's attractive force < Spring

There is an open space between the pole piece and the plunger and the attractive force of the permanent magnet is lower than the force of the spring.
Current flows to the coil, the electromagnetic force is created in such direction that the attractive force increases and becomes stronger than the spring. Then, the plunger moves towards the pole piece. Permanent magnet's attractive power > Spring

The space between the pole piece and the plunger narrows and so the attractive force is strengthening. Even the magnetic force from the coil is cut, the attractive force is stronger than the force of the spring.
